Echodog Games has announced that Signs of the Sojourner, a deck-building game that integrates story telling, will come to Steam in 2019.
Signs of the Sojourner is a unique narrative-based deck builder that reportedly focuses on relationships and personal choice. The game was announced via an official teaser trailer that can be seen here.
The trailer offers a lot in terms of aesthetics with an engaging theme song and strikingly interesting, colorful graphics. In big, bold letters the trailer states “Your deck is your character.” Echodog Games wants to get the message across that every card you play shapes who you are and how your story unfolds. Decks can be built to please others or for solitary gain.
In addition, the trailer showcases a simple but rewarding ‘sequence-building’ gameplay mechanic. The benefit of winning said encounters is not yet clear, as the game seeks to focus on communication rather than being victory-driven. The publishers also promise an eclectic, distinctive world to collect cards which can be used to interact with NPCs.
Alongside the teaser trailer, Echodog have also announced that players who sign up to their Discord will gain immediate access to their free alpha build.
Creative Director, Dyala Kattan-Wright said: “The original pitch was ‘a deck-building game where your deck is a metaphor for the type of person you are.’ Who hasn’t drawn a bad hand during a conversation with a joke that didn’t land or a miscommunicated thought?”
“We combined this idea with our desire to tell stories about travel and diverse communities, about finding a home and connecting. We hope Signs of the Sojourner is a type of game that players haven’t seen before but an experience that they can relate to.”
It appears likely that this will be a type of game we haven’t seen before. As for how we can relate to a card-dictated social atmosphere, that’s yet to be seen.
