We knew 2020 was going to be crazy before it even got here, but early news is already underlining just how epic a year this is going to be for video games – especially if you’re talking remakes.
No, we’re not talking about the Final Fantasy VII Remake now, but the recent Resident Evil 2 overhaul that Capcom unleashed on us last year.
Remember how epic that was?
Well, in case you missed the news, the Osaka-based company is delving back into the archives and bringing out the natural continuation of RE 2 Remake’s awesome saga with a new look at Resident Evil 3.
Prepare to run away from Nemesis all over again as Raccoon City falls apart all around you. Naturally, the RE 3 Remake has some competition this year, with games like Cyberpunk 2077 and the aforementioned return to Midgar. Even so, Capcom isn’t taking any chances (rolling out a survival mode, among other things), but one recent reveal has some gamers scratching their heads.
Apparently, there is only going to be one Resident Evil 3 Remake ending. For those of us that read between the lines, that would seem that the game is promising less replay value than its predecessor right out of the gate.
So, what gives?
It all starts with an interview that the Official PlayStation Magazine recently conducted with the game’s producer, Peter Fabiano. In the interview they asked him about the game having multiple endings and he simply said “no” to the question as to whether or not the remake would have them.
Even though Fabiano claims that the game will only have one definitive ending, he did also confirm in that same interview that there will be side-quests and extra content aside from Jill’s main story. He specifically cites Carlos and his story as an example of some of the other content players can expect in the RE 3 Remake.
While the Resident Evil 3 Remake ending (or lack thereof) was interesting news, the one thing most everyone wants to know about the game is how Nemesis will work in terms of mechanics. And, here, Capcom is promising a thoroughly terrifying experience.
“We certainly took some elements that we learned from putting together Resident Evil 2’s Tyrant, but Nemesis is his own brand of terror, and a relentless pursuer who can use weapons… Resident Evil 3 has more open spaces and one of the things that makes Nemesis so frightening is that he is relentless and you never know when or where he might show up,” Fabiano explained to OPM.
Anyone familiar with the RE 2 Remake knows exactly what he is talking about.
Interestingly, giving Nemesis both the ability to pop up at any time and use weapons introduces a lot of randomness that some critics felt was lacking in the RE 2 Remake effort.
Many gamers and industry watchers alike are also expecting that the RE 3 Remake will borrow heavily from the same engine used in RE 2 Remake – just like with the original games.
Even with such a massive tidal wave of quality titles coming out next year, it is looking like RE 3 Remake will still manage to stand out in a crowded field.
