It hasn’t been made official yet, but we are pretty much sure a new Batman game is heading our way, and it could land as soon as Fall 2020. After nearly half a decade since Batman: Arkham Knight came out, the rumors are getting stronger than ever regarding the next virtual adventure of the caped crusader.
Today, I’d like to tell you about some recent information that has come to light and unsurprisingly, took the gaming community by storm. However, I should also remind you to take everything you are about to read in this article with a pinch of salt as none of them are coming from the Warner Brothers headquarters.
If you are still curious, let’s hop into the Batmobile and find out what the internet has to say about the next Batman game.
What’s the new Batman game called?
You might be familiar with the name Batman: Arkham Legacy if you’ve been searching for information about the new Batman game online. The name has been popping up frequently in Reddit threads and other online gaming communities, so it’s reasonable to assume that the next Batman game will be officially called Arkham Legacy.
However, the developers are yet to assign a name to the new Batman project. A twitter user by the name Sabi, who drew a lot of heat from Nintendo over some major E3 leaks, was the first to claim that the game will be called Arkham Legacy, and the name caught on from there.
When is it coming out?
At the time of writing, we don’t even know when the game’s going to be announced by Warner Brothers Montreal. Personally, I was pretty convinced the Game Awards 2019 would give us the good news, but much to my frustration, that was not the case. Arkham Legacy or whatever the new Batman game will be called, was not a part of the event.
Geeks Worldwide have recently reported the game will have a Fall 2020 release date. This could coincide with the PlayStation 5 release, which is also expected to release this fall. However, with Xbox confirmed for a holiday release, is it more logical to expect an early 2021 release date?
I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of an earlier cross-generational release, but being so close to next-gen console launch, will WB rush to release the game? We’re going to have to wait and find out.
What are the developers saying?
Through a series of cryptic social media posts, Warner Brothers have all but confirmed they are working on a Batman game. Back in September 2019, Warner Brothers Montreal made the following tweet captioning “Capture the Knight”
Since then, they have also posted fragments of an image, which looked like the image below after the fans made an effort to put them all together.
This logo closely resembles the Court of Owls logo. Court of Owls is a powerful secret organization in Gotham city that has controlled the city’s underworld for hundreds of years. However, the logo also looks quite similar to that of GCPD’s (Gotham City Police Department).
But the likelihood of this being a Court of Owls logo is much higher since this is not the first time Court of Owls was teased by WB Montreal. Back in 2017, a member of the WB Montreal gaming division posted a picture of people wearing owl masks at the company’s holiday party.
The speculations got stronger when an associate producer of Warner Brothers Montreal posted a picture of herself wearing, what appears to be, a Court of Owls t-shirt.
It’s going to be a soft reboot, not a sequel
Geeks Worldwide also maintain that the new game will not be a continuation of the much-acclaimed Arkham franchise but rather will be a soft reboot instead. We could get introduced to an expanded universe with the existence of more DC superheroes. It’s also said that we can expect a new Superman game soon afterward.
Co-Op and Playable Batfamily
The next Batman game could feature the full Batfamily including Nightwing, Batgirl, and Robin. You can play as any of these characters alongside Batman, the lack of this opportunity was one of the very few drawbacks Arkham games had. The game could also have a co-op feature which will allow multiple players to team up.
The new Batman game is shaping out to be a crucial entry in DC Universe’s gaming world. Can it launch a successful gaming universe of DC superheroes? We sure hope so.
