It’s a sign of the times when video games and related technology are used to help prepare today’s doctors as well as the next generation.
The video game space is no stranger to mergers and acquisitions, but Brainlab’s recent purchase of Level Ex demonstrates just how varied the industry has become in recent years.
The maker of video games used to test the skills of physicians, Level Ex naturally fits in with Brainlab’s larger portfolio. The Chicago company’s unique products will be integrated directly into Brainlab’s existing line which includes, among other things, driving adoption of “digital medical technology across the value chain,” Business Wire reports.
Level Ex, for their part, has built a healthy and prosperous company that counts over 600,000 physicians and students in the United States among its active user base. Founded in 2015, Businesswire calls the company a “disruptor” in the field of digital medical technology. Indeed, that’s a view that Brainlab’s brass seems to share.
President and CEO of Brainlab Stefan Vilsmeier said of the acquisition, “We began working with Level Ex in 2019 for several reasons. They are the best at disseminating best practices through video games, and they are unrivaled in their level of ergonomic user interaction, gaming-industry-quality 3D graphics, precise physics models and game mechanics psychology.”
When it comes to how Level Ex’s mission aligns with the broader mission statement at Brainlab, the points of possible coordination couldn’t be greater.
Founder and CEO of Level Ex Sam Glassenberg said of the move, “Our mission is to advance the practice of medicine through play: unleashing video game technology and design to improve skill and accelerate the adoption curve of new techniques and technologies in healthcare. I can’t imagine a better place to fulfill that mission than Brainlab—a company that has fiercely advanced the cutting edge of medicine for decades and continues to build platforms that service broad ecosystems in healthcare.”
Following the acquisition of Level Ex by Brainlab, the company plans on expanding the former’s partnerships and offerings with relevant industry segments such as pharmaceuticals.
