DC FanDome didn’t disappoint this year and the news that we were getting a new game from the Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady Studios using the Suicide Squad as their subject matter was both unexpected and epic.
While it seems like we have more high-quality superhero games now than ever before, the Batman games from Rocksteady hold a special place in our hearts for how amazing they were then and now. At one point, anything based upon popular comic book or movie properties tended to be questionable at best when it came to a gaming iteration on the concept. That’s completely changed and now we can actually look forward to things like this with somewhat unrestrained optimism. After all, these games have their competition cut out for them when it comes to blockbuster comic book IP and that’s a different world than when the Arkham games first arrived on the scene.
So, what are we getting with the game? Well, it looks like everything a DC Comic Books fan could ever want and then some – just like the upcoming film from James Gunn.
Known for his work with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, comic book film fans are looking forward to seeing what Gunn can do for the DC property which had a beleaguered first outing.
The game, known as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, pits the squad against none other than Superman. There were some rumors prior to this reveal that the next game from Rocksteady would be a Superman title so it seems like rumors aren’t always totally based upon fantasy after all. The conceit that you will be pursuing Superman instead of playing as him is intriguing. Even more so when you consider how invulnerable he is and how that makes him the perfect video game antagonist. How the squad will overcome the Man of Steel will likely be a huge component of the game as well.
Interestingly, the Suicide Squad games will be tied in with Rocksteady’s previous work with Arkham. How that will be accomplished remains to be seen but it looks like the games will occupy a shared narrative universe of some kind. Additionally, for gamers hoping for a return to the Arkham universe, this does give some weight that it could be part of a bigger plan by Rocksteady to revisit these various IP in the next generation of consoles.
