When Pokemon GO first hit the scene, it was one of the biggest video game sensations in a long, long time. And while many have tried to replicate that magic, few have succeeded while Pokemon GO, amazingly, still goes strong.
But the folks behind The Witcher think they can make a game like Pokemon GO that uses the IP of The Witcher universe and perhaps give users a more “dark fantasy” experience in the process.
That makes some sense given the popularity of The Witcher series on Netflix and the diverse multimedia ventures it is spawning. Based upon CD Projekt Red’s amazing series of games that are themselves based upon some really awesome fantasy books, The Witcher has really waited in the wings for its time to shine.
Coming from CD Projekt Red’s newest studio, Spokko, the augmented-reality app is going to be on mobile devices and has been in development for some time, Polygon reports.
“Featuring console-grade visuals, Monster Slayer lets players explore the world around them while tracking, studying, and fighting monsters both new and familiar, using time of day and real-life weather conditions to gain the upper hand. Preparation is key in order to defeat tougher enemies, as players will need to brew powerful potions and oils, craft bombs and monster bait, and upgrade their character before putting these beasts to the sword and signs in first-person AR combat,” the devs explained.
In addition to the monster-collecting aspect, gamers will also have other things to participate in such as events and quests. The stories will be inspired by the lore of The Witcher gaming universe. As is typical with this genre, the game will be free to play with microtransactions liberally sprinkled throughout. It is expected to come out later this year for iOS and Android smartphones.
Of course, given CD Projekt Red’s track record as a developer, we might have something to really look forward to with this app. That said, we wonder how much attention it is going to get since it is slated to hit the app stores around the same time Cyberpunk 2077 comes out. For those of you who have lived under a rock for the past five years or so, Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red’s next big game and its release is one of the most anticipated of the year.
