It looks like Call of Duty: Black Ops is returning to its roots with its next installment, named CoD: Black Ops Cold War.
And what a way to make an entrance, too. From the trailer getting banned in China to the general James Bond vibe of the game trailer, the next Black Ops game looks set to impress.
Treyarch co-studio head Dan Bunting said of the game’s theme, “This is a pure Black Ops game, a geopolitical globe-trotting battle set in the early 1980s where players will come face to face with historical figures.”
If anything, it is also going to be a markedly different game than those in the past, its return to a longstanding theme aside.
That’s to be expected given how much Call of Duty’s multiplayer has evolved over the past several years alone. Aside from battle royale, however, it looks like the game will also be resurrecting some things that were once thought the way of yesterday – like a campaign mode.
Creative developer at Raven Software Dan Vondrak told USA Today about the game. He stated that it takes place in “a year that saw two global superpowers locked in a nuclear arms race, conspiracies about presidential elections, illegal military operations on both sides, the paranoia of spies living next door, and looming over all of this was the fear and shadow of World War III.”
Best of all for longstanding fans of the series, Black Ops Cold War will have a story and one in which the players choices really matter as far as the outcome is concerned.
“This was something that was really important to us to make sure the player could feel those earlier decisions mattered,” Vondrak added. “We didn’t want to go crazy and dilute it with too many endings, but we added enough where they can feel the impact on the world and feel some ownership over the game.”
USA Today also reports that series favorites will be returning, including “CIA operative Alex Mason, Master Sergeant Frank Woods and CIA agent Jason Hudson.”
Further, “Early sneak [peeks] of Black Ops Cold War show that clandestine team meeting with President Ronald Reagan and Secretary of State Alexander Haig.”
If that doesn’t sound like the perfect mashup of a 1980s action film with heavy Cold War themes and modern FPS gaming, we don’t know what does.
Slated for release on November 13, 2020, Cold War will be available on both current-gen as well as next-generation consoles. As is Activision’s tradition with these releases, there will be both standard versions as well as more expensive versions that come with all kinds of bonuses. As for the multiplayer mode, Treyarch is planning on showing it off on September 9th.
