Resident Evil is having quite a busy year and that’s outside of new games and remakes.
It looks like the Capcom IP will be joining the rest of the video game world in transitioning to a TV or movie property as Netflix has officially given the green light to a series based on RE. Of course, there’s also word of the reboot of the Resident Evil movie world so it seems like we’re going to get plenty of zombie and Umbrella Corp product-based action coming our way soon. Andrew Dabb will oversee the adaptation for both the show and also the outfit behind the RE films, Constantin.
He said of the television show, “Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time. I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first-ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world. For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”
So what kind of story are they plotting our for this show? It sounds somewhat convoluted but, in essence, it is going to take place across two different timelines, future and past. These times aim to show the impact of Umbrella’s various viruses on the world. In the first part, we’re going to follow some Wesker kids who live in New Raccoon City and who think some weird stuff is going on in their perfect corporate town. The second timeline will show the world after all of the devastation and how these now adults deal with the legacy of the Wesker name.
As long as it sticks to the general spirit of the games, we can see it working out. How it will tie in with the lore of the games and whether or not it will be canon is another thing altogether. We expect it will probably depend on how well it is received but we wouldn’t be shocked to see the series and the new film adaptations feeding off of one another in some kind of way if it all works out properly.
Naturally, and unstoppably, the Resident Evil video game series will proceed forth no matter what happens.
