Electric car manufacturer Tesla wants to bring some in-car entertainment, in the form of video games, to its drivers in the future. At least, that is what everyone is assuming from the most recent job posting put on the company’s website.
Of course, Elon Musk likes to stay in the headlines and he has a particularly huge following in the tech community so maybe this is an experiment and not a company-wide direction. Even so, the implications are really cool.
Here’s the job description just in case you are interested (and let’s just say, you’re going to need to know your stuff):
Tesla strives to make its cars the most fun possible; bringing video game experiences to the car helps increase that fun. In this incredibly rare opportunity to help build a video games platform, we are looking for a highly motivated software engineer to help enable the best video game content to be available in-car. Come put that industry experience to great use and help us build this platform.
You will need strong software engineering skills, excellent interpersonal communication, and experience accepting and giving meaningful feedback on technical designs. You will be expected to contribute to many different areas to make projects happen, that may range from kernel level code changes, to in game behavior, to helping developers work with our platform. You will be responsible for the look and feel of the play experience, architecture, and whatever else is needed to create fun. You will need to collaborate with our top-notch design team and back end developers to help create this platform.
Our goal is to set the bar for what video games in a car can be; much of this is uncharted territory having never been done before. We want to work with people who are excited by this goal and have the talent to deliver on it.

In terms of skills, you will need a thorough knowledge of C++ as well as an “excellent” grasp of computer programming concepts and “customer-facing” code. You’ll also need to have a willingness to explore new ideas and concepts as well as work within any part of the development stack. Attention to detail and a superior work ethic are also core requirements of the position.
We assume this could become a thing once cars start driving themselves. Naturally, at that point, Tesla will probably get the attention of some pretty big names out there that want to make their games available for Tesla’s in-car console. At that point, though, it could be an industry-wide thing so maybe Tesla is getting in ahead of the action? Who knows but the imagination does tend to run wild when stories like this crop up.
