Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom: Eternal are two of the most highly anticipated video game releases in 2020. Other than the March 20 release date, you won’t find anything these games have in common. But, that didn’t stop the fans of these games sharing love and respect for each other in a lovely gesture of community spirit.
It had been a while since gamers were expecting to get their hands on these two titles. Both were scheduled for a 2019 release, but much to the dismay of their fans, the release dates got pushed back to 2020. So, when it was announced the games will come out on the same day, both fanbases came up with a brilliant way to congratulate each other.
Reddit user u/Genkiz, who is an avid Doom fan, shared a picture on the Animal Crossing subreddit that ended up spearheading a beautiful campaign. The picture was created by another Reddit user u/ rakiat97 and envisioned Doomguy showing his phone to Isabelle, with both cheerfully expressing their admiration for each other.
This followed up with a series of Doom-Animal Crossing crossover fan arts from both sides, as fans continued to share their take on characters from these two franchises meeting each other.
Freelance pixel artist Inx kicked it up a notch by making an animated clip that depicts a situation where Isabelle and Doomguy trade places for a day. Ever imagined Isabelle gunning up to kill some demons while Doomguy explores around an island looking for some delicious fruits?
It wasn’t only the fans who were interacting with each other! Doom’s official Twitter handle also played along the game asking around online about the upcoming Animal Crossing release.
In a world of social media where fandom and bantering go side to side, this is a very unique phenomenon to say the least. The games not being direct rivals might have contributed to the fact, since slaughtering demons and making friends with animals offer two very different experiences.
As March 20 draws nearer, I’m sure we will get to see a lot more love being shared between the two communities.
