EVE Online is one of the longest running online games out there, but it is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. From its vast and opaque world and lore to its cutthroat and zero-sum world, EVE is one of those rare games that stays in the headlines for all of the right reasons. A virtual ecosystem that sustains itself, CCP Games has struggled to bring it outside of its core property and into other realms. And it isn’t for lack of trying, either.

That’s why it didn’t really surprise anyone when they announced that their shooter set in the EVE universe was cancelled. But no one expected to learn about a new shooter in the EVE universe that same day. So what gives?

CCP’s George Kellion explained it in the following post on Reddit:

“This decision was taken because Project Nova’s gameplay experience as presented at EVE Vegas ’18 would not have achieved our ambitious goals for this concept. Moreover, it is very common for games in active development to evolve over time, often substantially. We remain committed to offering a rock-solid, action-oriented gameplay experience with stellar visuals, but due to significant changes in the scope and direction of our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept, it also made sense to update how we refer to this project internally. So, we are no longer using the codename Project Nova for this game concept.

“Furthermore, we are moving away from publicly announcing our internal project codenames and will wait until we’re ready for a full reveal. We want to show you rather than tell you how we have evolved this concept and we’re looking forward to doing so when the time comes to present this concept as a fully-fledged game.”

Since the studio won’t be talking about its development projects publicly anymore – and definitely won’t be assigning them codenames – we’ll just have to speculate as to what the new game could be about. The company’s previous Dust 514 was a PlayStation 3 game that linked up with the online title in interesting ways and was finally discontinued in 2016. Whether this new title is an attempt at further refining that concept or something else entirely will just have to wait to be answered.

What do you think? Does a shooter set in the EVE Online universe sound appealing to you? Do you currently play EVE Online? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below if you like.
