TheMexicanRunner celebrates after beating the final boss of Battletoads. There are a few seconds following the fight before the final time is locked.
Just in time for the opening ceremonies of Summer Games Done Quick, Twitch speedrunner “TheMexicanRunner” achieved a new world record on Battletoads any% for NES on July 2, 2017.
His time of 12:45.27 came after 8,204 attempts, beating “Tionic” who previously held the record at 12:47.50. A few days earlier TheMexicanRunner, often known by “TMR,” came within half a second of the record.
The final time may change slightly after being verified by moderators of the game at speedrun.com/battletoads_nes.
Responding to a question about improving his time from a viewer, TMR said he wasn’t interested in pushing the record further.
“I’m the kind of person where I don’t care about improving the time,” he said. “I just want to have a world record, that’s all man. I just want to be a world record holder, man. I can do way better, I can, but I just want to have the world record and I have it man.”
Along with speedrunning games, TMR is also known for beating every licensed NES title on stream. His next goal is to take the warpless Battletoads world record, also held by Tionic with a time of 23:51.
