If you enjoy the battle royale genre and you’re ready to move on from PUBG and Apex Legends, you might take a look at joining the Spellbreak closed alpha. A few rounds of the game might surprise you and have you coming back for more.
Fans of Paragon and other MOBAs may recognize some of the influences they’ve had on the development of this new magical free-for-all. You can choose two classes as the round starts, both of which offer bonuses and benefits during your fight. As you progress further in the session you’re given the opportunity to unlock new passive skills that belong to said classes.
Fans of PUBG and Apex Legends will immediately feel comfortable with the other mechanics of this game: dropping in, looting, reviving teammates, and optimizing the gear you have on.
Combat is fresh for the genre. You don’t fire guns but instead you pick up items called gauntlets. These large magical gloves give you the ability to fire a primary and special secondary elemental spell (lightning, fire, ice, wind, earth, etc.). To add some extra flavor, the devs went ahead and let you use two different gauntlets at once. Different spells can be combined, allowing the players to create electrified ice sheets and fire tornadoes.
While the game is still in alpha and – as any game would – has bugs, it’s already in a great build and has a dedicated community. The gameplay is fun, tight and varied. Different item types allow you to construct a loadout that fits your play-style, which allows for the most amount of customization I’ve seen in a battle royale game.
If you’re interested in giving this game a try, you can sign up for the Closed Alpha Program here. You’ll need to join the game’s Discord, which can be found here. The devs seem to be responsive to community’s inputs also so you can be a part of the final product.
