The Mystery of Woolley Mountain is a point-and-click British comedy adventure game. The story follows a group of time-traveling scientists in their quest to rescue children from the evil witch of Woolley Mountain. Along the way, you will point, click, drag, and combine items in strange ways to solve puzzles in your quest to save the day.
There is much to like about Woolley Mountain, especially for fans of British comedy. The game is filled with fun, strange creatures such as Ropeman, (living rope in the shape of a man) and Springhead. My favorite has to be the alcoholic sea urchin.
Fans of the recent South Park RPG games will feel right at home here. Genuinely amusing moments are aplenty and there is more than one laugh out loud moment. Puzzles, however, are largely not intuitive and controls can be clumsy. Dialogue is serviceable but it can be bland and overly simplistic at times. While some may be turned off by its quality, I found it more charming and nostalgic.
Shockingly, the best part of the game is not the comedy or the gameplay but the soundtrack. Several times throughout my playthrough, I paused to just listen to the indie 8-bit synth-pop inspired soundtrack.
Undoubtedly, the developers wanted to pay homage to the point-and-click adventures of the ’80s and ’90s. Instead of a clever reimagining of the genre, Woolley Mountain shares or perhaps embraces the faults of its predecessors. For better or for worse, the game feels more like the web-based flash games from the early 2000s and less like Monkey Island.
