Omensight: Definitive Edition Review- The Doctor’s Assessment

Spearhead Games presents for review with Omensight: Definitive Editon. Omensight is an action role-playing game. You are the Harbinger, a supernatural warrior brought forth to save the world from destruction.

Assessment:

In Omensight, you are the Harbinger, a supernatural deity who arrives to save the world from destruction. This time your foe is Voden, an ancient God of Destruction. You are reborn to investigate, solve, and ultimately prevent the murder of the priestess Vera. The Harbinger is aided by the Witch, the mysterious caretaker of the Tree of Life. The Witch facilitates your movement through time as you try to unravel the mystery.

Design:

Omensight was a wonderful surprise. First off, it is a rather beautiful game. The palette of Omensight is a wonderful mix of vibrant blues, purples, reds, and yellows. The character design is memorable. The little background you receive before the game begins sets up the story nicely. It left me wanting to know more about the world before the time of the game. The voice acting and the writing can be spotty at times but is quickly forgiven.

Combat:

The combat is rather simple. The Harbinger is equipped with fast and heavy basic attacks. You will utilize a few magic skills and a dodge to survive enemy encounters. Combat is never particularly difficult as the Harbinger is rather agile and flies around the battlefield like a butterfly with razor blades. At times, combat can be a bit frustrating due to cramped spaces and tight camera angles. Although, no encounter is insurmountable.

Gameplay:

The Harbinger arrives one day before the destruction of the world and gets to spend that last day with one of four companions. Each companion comes equipped with a unique special skill to aid you in combat. You will spend the day with each companion. As you do, you will uncover more clues to aid in solving the murder. With each new discovery, you will open a new story option in the other paths. This is where the game can become a bit repetitive as every level is rather linear and each path follows the same path in the level.

Fortunately, the game provides a mechanism to keep track of every clue discovered and where it was discovered. Players can only be access these clues at the Tree of Life. This hub is where players will level up, purchase new skills, and upgrade skills. Using this device can save you from revisiting each storyline over and over. Additionally, you can skip levels until the critical decision point is reached. These decision points will need to be played twice in order to get every clue.

The definitive edition of the game adds a much needed, much better ending after the original ending was received rather poorly.

Recommendation:

Spearhead Games has provided us with a must-play game. Omensight is not terribly long and the price is great. Omensight will appeal to any gamer that appreciates great visual design, simple combat, and fun story-telling devices.
