Magic: The Gathering Too Complex for Computers to Solve

No matter how much we love variety in our strategy games, there tends to always be an optimized strategy for consistent wins. Applying computing to the constraints of these games – letting AI iterate on every possible combination of moves and outcomes – is the modern way of determining these strategies. It’s been done with chess and even StarCraft.

But a recently published paper has determined that “Magic: The Gathering is the most computationally complex real-world game known in the literature.” The paper added that “finding the best move in a game of Magic, in the worst case, cannot be computed.” This is good news for all of you trying to learn the meta in the latest expansion War of the Spark.
