4:54.
The final second to ever come off of the classic Super Mario Bros. was achieved today. Niftski did what was once seen as impossible in the early evening of April 7, 2021, touching the golden axe at 4:54.948. The historic and world record time was performed live on Twitch and can currently be seen here.
“Oh my god, I clutched it out,” Niftski said immediately following the run. “I stayed calm and it worked.”
Once upon a time a 4:55 was seen as the holy grail of times in Super Mario Bros. Today, there are 12 runners with the time.
However, 4:54 is different. While there are to be contenders to the title of world record for Super Mario Bros., the community will likely not see another whole second dropping off the game. A video released in October, 2018 by YouTube channel HappyLee showcases the then-record by Kosmic against the TAS. The final times were 4.54.032 for the TAS and 4.55.913 for Kosmic, respectively.
After the run, Niftski told his mom the good news over the phone.
“I just got world record again, I just got world record,” Niftski said. “I got 4:54.948 mom. I got any% world record and I am getting a lot of love and support. 900 live viewers right now mom, anything you want to say?”
“I am very proud of you,” Niftski’s mother said. “Way to go, you are blessed.”
The full video of the run is also available on YouTube.
